| Christians have worshipped at Highclere since Saxon times - the first documentary evidence being the Charter of AD 749 when 'Cuthred the King' granted the land to the Church of Peter and Paul in Wentana (now Winchester Cathderal). | |
 | Our 'modern' church was built by the Fourth Earl of Carnarvon in 1870. His architect was Sir George Gilbert Scott, who had also done some work with Barry at Highclere Castle. Some of the monuments were moved from the earlier church (see below), notable the impressive Tudor tomb of Richard Kingmill, Lord of the Manor from1572 to 1600. A scroll records the Patrons and incumbents, starting with Aluric the Priest in 1086, through to our present Rector. |
| Sir Robert Sawyer built a new church near the Manor House in 1688-1689, replacing an earlier Norman church - he had complained that the old church was not big enough. The bases of the pillars of this church can still be seen close to the tearoom entrance to Highclere Castle. | |

| An exhibition of the history of Highclere, staged at the church by the History Group of the Highclere Society as part of our Jubilee celebrations, was so popular that it had to be kept open for an extra day - many people came several times! |
| Why not join us in our historic church, where we hold services of worship and praise every Sunday!
