Highclere Church Worship

All are welcome at our regular services - do come and join us! This page explains our approach to worship in our regular pattern of Sunday services. For details of places and times please look at our Services page.

Our services at Highclere, Ashmansworth and Crux Easton are based on these main resources:

  • the Holy Bible
  • the Book of Common Prayer (BCP)
  • Common Worship
  • Hymns Ancient and Modern (revised) (Highclere) and
  • Hymns Ancient and Modern (new standard) (Ashmansworth)
  • English Hymnal (Crux Easton)
  • Come and Praise (Ashmansworth and Crux Easton) (traditional and modern hymns)
  • Mission Praise (Highclere) (traditional and modern hymns)

You will find background information about these in our Links page.

Our regular Holy Communion services, Matins (Morning Prayer) and Evensong all follow the Book of Common Prayer of 1662, which - with the Holy Bible - is the bedrock of the Anglican Church. The 8.00 am Communion at Highclere and the 9.45 am Communion at Ashmansworth or Crux Easton are said (ie without Hymn singing).

Parish Communion at Highclere on the First Sunday of each month takes the form of a Sung Eucharist, following our own adaptation of Common Worship - the new standard for worship in the Church of England, introduced during 2002.

Matins (Morning Prayer) and Evensong include Hymns, and Matins includes a short address.

For our hymns at Highclere we use Hymns Ancient and Modern at Matins and Evensong and in the Parish Communion. Mission Praise is used for our Family Services and at Matins on the Fourth Sunday. Mission Praise includes most of the best known and loved 'old favourites' along with many newer hymns and hymns for younger people.
